In the U.S., there are 20.8 million people with substance use disorder which is greater than people with any type of cancer and about the same number of those with diabetes.
This is a disease – not a choice – and it affects our county in a multitude of ways.
Substance use disorder causes loss of work days, loss of employment, and increases in the poverty rate. Franklin County has seen a 40% increase in overdose deaths since 2012 and 30% from 2014 to 2015. We are poised to continue at this level from the county coroner’s data of overdose deaths in 2016. 80% of these deaths involve opiates.
